Kieth Wailoo, Martin Luther King Jr. Professor of History and Director of the Center for Race and Ethnicity at Rutgers, will be the next speaker in the Center’s Distinguished Lecturer series. He has authored several books examining changes in disease patterns in America, focusing especially on the ways in which scientific and technological advances have interacted with health care politics, racial and ethnic relations, and cultural politics to inform responses to disease in the 20th century and into the 21st century. Professor Wailoo will discuss a project funded by a Robert Wood Johnson Investigator Award, The Cultural Politics of Pain: Medicine, Society and the Struggle for Relief in America. His lecture will take place at noon on November 30 in the Law School’s moot courtroom.

Grants and Contracts
Over the past year, Center faculty have received approximately one million dollars in funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Office of Research Integrity and the Greenwall Foundation.
A recently completed project within the Center surveyed leading experts in Responsible Conduct of Research to establish a consensus on the ideal objectives and content for courses in this field. Dr. James DuBois served as project director for the The Office of Research Integrity funded study.

Bander Center News
The Dr. Steven J. Bander Center for Medical Professionalism was endowed by a $3 million donation from Dr. Bander, a nephrologist who attended Saint Louis University Medical School. The Bander Center is one of the only of its kind in the country, devoted specifically to studying professionalism and the relationships with industry that arise within medical practice and research.
