The admission deadline for Fall 2010 is July, 9 2010. Special permission is needed from the Program Director to be admitted after this date. After participants have been admitted into the Certificate Program, they should register for courses in the following manner.

COURSE REGISTRATION FOR SPRING SEMESTER 2010.

List of Courses for Spring Semester 2010.

  • HCE.513, Patient Safety and Medical Error
  • HCE.514, Organ Donation: Ethical Issues in Clinical Practice
  • HCE.515, Perinatal and Pediatric Ethics
  • HCE.516, Law and Bioethics*
  • HCE.589 Capstone Project* (will also be offered in the summer semester)

An asterisk(*) indicates that the course is required in order to obtain the full Certificate.

Friday, January 8, 2010: Registration and payment deadline; readings available (via E-Reserves) for course participants.

A late registration fee applies after this date. Immediately upon registering, financial arrangements must be made with Student Accounts. Registrations will be cancelled for students who have not made financial arrangements by this date. Cost per credit hour for 2009-10: $905. Continuing Education credits/units are calculated on completing minimally 3 credit hours of course work in this semester.

Participants should complete the assigned readings prior to attending the on-site seminar.

Friday, February 5 - Saturday, February 6, 2010: Second On-Site Seminar.

Monday, February 8 - Monday, May 3, 2010: Distance Learning.

For each of the courses, participants will analyze and resolve one standardized case. (Students enrolled in the Capstone Project will develop and analyze their own case.) Participants in the optional concentration in Catholic health care ethics will be required to incorporate into their case analyses issues of Catholic health care ethics.

COURSE REGISTRATION FOR SUMMER SEMESTER 2010.

  • HCE.589, Capstone Project: Ethical Case Analysis (1 credit hour required course; also offered in the spring semester).

Registration and financial arrangements deadline deadline: Monday, May 7, 2010. Cost: $905.

Students will develop one original case from their experience with supporting literature. Students will be assigned to small “virtual groups” and as they analyze and resolve their cases:

  • Certificate students will post their individual cases via the internet for the rest of their own "virtual group."
  • Group members in each "virtual group" will read the cases posted by their own group and provide comments/feedback/questions via online discussion to each of the authors.
  • Authors will consider the comments from the online discussion in revising the case prior to submitting it for grading.
  • The course Faculty will read a draft of the case and provide commentary on the literature and analysis.
  • After revising the case based on input from members of the "virtual group" and the course Faculty, each case will be submitted to the course Faculty for grading.

COURSE REGISTRATION FOR FALL SEMESTER 2010.

For students wishing to complete the program within one year, it is recommended that they register for four fall semester courses, three spring semester courses, and the summer Capstone course. (Students also have the option of completing the program in just two semesters by taking the Capstone course as a fourth spring semester course.)

The on-site seminar begins on Friday morning for participants in the general track, and on Thursday afternoon for participants enrolled in the optional concentration in Catholic health care ethics.

Monday, September 27 - Friday, December 10, 2010: Distance Learning.

For each of the courses (with the exception of HCE.501), participants will analyze and resolve one standardized case. Participants in the optional concentration in Catholic health care ethics will be required to incorporate into their case analyses issues of Catholic health care ethics.
